Women Make Movies is thrilled to lead off the Spring 2022 Webinar Series with an extended conversation and Master Class with the Barbara Kopple, one of the most important documentary filmmakers in the world, winner of two Academy Awards for Harlan County, USA and American Dream. With filmmaker Barbara Kopple, you find yourself in the company of a woman with more verve, passion and lust for knowledge than many artists, and she will talk about her long career in the making of over 40 + documentary films. She will speak to sustainability in our business, what has changed from her time as an intern with the Maysles Brothers, to her Academy awards. Not content to work only in nonfiction, she has helmed both feature films and television, earning a Director's Guild America Award in 1998 for an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street. Her documentary work includes Shut Up & Sing(2006), which chronicles the fallout and evolution of the Dixie Chicks after making a public anti-war statement; Miss Sharon Jones!, in which she spent two years with the feisty soul singer as she battled pancreatic cancer and most recently Desert One, about a little known a secret mission to free hostages of the 1979 Iranian revolution told from both the US and the Iranian points of view.
